Agree that testing kit manufacturers have a strong interest in making routine testing the default position.

Surely this has been obvious  ever since Hancock first started encouraging bids for testing contracts????

Big Pharma is the biggest beneficiary of the pandemic, followed by Big Tech (everyone forced to go online etc), but yes, also the PPE manufacturers, the testing industry (at least two empty shopfronts on Upper Street, vacated by actual restaurants that died during the pandemic now have testing outfits and "fit to fly" certificates and PCR tests etc), the Serco/Crapitas of the world (who do you think is staffing test & trace and the like?) and many more. 

All have a huge incentive to keep all this going - all the people who got a share of the tens of billions the government has been throwing at this.

I ordered some lateral flow tests, took one look at the instructions and decided to build the Cutty Sark out of q tips instead as it looked easier

The thing is Cookie, those tests are lose/lose from every perspective. It’s trivially easy to get a fake negative if you want that. And if you genuinely want to test yourself and follow govt guidelines , they are completely useless because they are so unreliable and inaccurate that the FDA has banned them and I think the UK govt has decided not to buy more after stocks run out or something. Testing is just a microcosm of economic cycles. Lack of supply leads to increase in production which leads to oversupply, which uniquely then leads to forcing loads of under the radar covid cases out into the open so we can have a perfect storm of loads of positive cases combined with rises in hospitalisations and deaths that were always going to be a part of any opening absent a zero covid strategy to allow economically detached scientists to pontificate about staying at home while hotel workers, travel workers etc. enjoy poverty. Happy days.
