Trump or Tory victory

If you had to choose one, which would it be?

Tories will continue to run down the country, but Trump could fvck up the world.  Tricky.

Can we make it a proper Sophie's choice and have the one that loses gassed to death? For trump that would just involve putting him in a small room with his own flatulent self.

I'd take the Tories.  I listened to a podcast featuring a professor whose expertise is civil wars and she rated the US as having highest probability of any country not already in one if Trump gets in.  I'd always thought this was total pie-in-the-sky stuff, but listening to her was powerful.

The Tories are absolutely and totally awful, but Starmer isn't going to fundamentally change anything because he won't increase taxes, at least in the first term.

Trump won't fcuk up the world

if anything Trump and the MAGA's isolationism will force europe to become more like america and 2 americas (from the point of big strong capitalist liberal democracies) would be a good thing

Civil war in the US is highly unlikely, Trump can't get protestors to show up in New York.  Marjorie Septic Greene has over stepped her bounds (when she moves to remove Johnson next week).

Depends whether a Trump victory involves GOP majorities in the house and senate. That would be genuinely scary for the world.

Trump alone wouldn’t be THAT bad and also what Sumo said about the effect it should have on Europe finding its balls.

If Britain was governed by people who pursue its national interest, Trump could be alright for us. Easily the most Anglophile president of recent decades, and vain enough to genuinely offer stuff in return for granting him the Order of the Thistle or some other meaningless shit

Refusing to engage with him to try and impress the NGO class who hate them anyway was one of the most idiot decisions of May’s government.

Almost nothing Trump could do would damage Britain to the extent another Tory government would.

Trump would totally fvkc up the world, starting with the US, if you don’t understand what they have planned then tbh you don’t deserve a job, the vote, access to running water, etc etc. Pay attention and do better.

pancakes Trumo could pull out of Nato.   That would be enormously damaging to our interests, potentially even existential.

I doubt Trump could unilaterally pull out of Nato, however he could refuse to send american support under a call for help which would probably kill it completely and amount to the same thing

I really don't know what a UK outside of Nato would look like, probably closer to europe on the basis the uk and france provide a nuclear umbrella to the EU? but "brussels have our nuke button" would go down badly with a lot of people

although I think a bit more autonomy and assertiveness in europe would be a good thing I am not sure we want a situation where there is some big european alliance armed to the teeth and looking to throw its weight about - a tougher europe allied to north america is a pretty good normal

I understand what Trump's backers have in their agenda and it is horrible and nightmarish

I recall the last trump government however and the george bush and obama governments and there is a limit to what the president can achieve thanks to the presence of various checks, balances and institutions

plus, Trump gets this second term and is done, he has even more incentive than the last time to look after himself

you're falling prey to the tory logic that a shouty man at the top can do what he wants and that is not how government works in a representative democracy
