Why are Labour supporting the Rwanda bill now?

And has there ever been any more cynical game playing in politics than this?

Despite the strong opposition to the Bill in the House of Lords, Labour confirmed yesterday that they will not seek to block the passage of the Bill.

Speaking for the Opposition, Labour's Lord Coaker criticised the Government for its intention to ignore and reject the Lords' amendments, but he restated Labour's clear and consistent position that it will not use the Lords to stop the Bill passing.

"I think the constitutional proprieties of this place needs restating again. As much as we accept that, as His Majesty's Opposition, we will not block the Bill, the constitutional quid pro quo is that the Government in the House of Commons, through their elected mandate, accept that we have a right to demand that they think again and revise legislation in view of what is said here," Lord Coaker said.

While the former Conservative minister Lord Clarke suggested the Lords could use a rarely invoked power to block a bill in a single Parliament, Lord Coaker disagreed and said: "I take what the noble Lord, Lord Clarke, says about the Parliament Act. We have said that we will not block the Bill. I understand the point the noble Lord is making—he is basically saying that because the Government know that we are not going to block the Bill they will just do what they want. Of course, that is the danger—perhaps, the reality—but I am saying that we have said we will not block the Bill, but we demand of His Majesty's Government that they respect the proper role of this House of Lords, and that they respect our right to say that we believe that certain things in the Bill are wrong. It may be the rule of law, or the compliance with international law, or other things being moved—but, if the Government simply turn around and say that, it will prove not only what I think party political-wise—that the Government are at the fag end of their existence—but will show that they are morally bankrupt as well."

Amit youre embarrassing yourself. Youd be shouting enemies of the people if they did. You are a crass, opportunistic right whinger who is desparately flailing around looking for something to justify your political wsnk fodder (who would no doubt consider you a cretinous usefulish idiot). Also gen up on the role of the lords.

Dick.

Rof Royalty, that wasn't playing politics, that was politicking a procedural quirk. One of the gambits that SKS himself is particularly partial too and therefore amusing when he gets one back in his own face.

This support for the Rwanda Bill from Labour is (yet another) vote face that has turned people's lives into a political football. Its shameful.

fanciful wishful thinking

Labour are playing by the rules and not blocking a bill that has been approved in the commons, by doing so they are letting the government burn everything down to achieve a result that most senior ministers have called "batshit" or "useless".

The best thing that can happen for labour is that this bill gets through, gets assent and flights take off for Rawanda, because the scheme is going to achieve nothing and Rishi has nailed himself and the government to it being a magix bullet. 20% voting tory is going to look amazing compared to where the polls will land when this scheme is up and running.

The best thing that can actually happen for labour is that this bill gets through, gets assent and flights take off for Rawanda, and then the boats stop just in time for Labour winning the general election.

They will then claim that as their victory in five years time.

the Rawanda deal is a 5 year deal (costing 120 million and 30K per refugee not to mention flight training logistics etc costs) for about 200 people to be resettled in Rawanda

in 2023, 29,437 people came to the UK in small boats

excluding all other asylum and illiegal migration that means you have something like a .5% chance of being sent to Rawanda if you swim to the UK

if I was faced death in some random hell hole in central asia, north africa or the middle east, I'd probably roll the dice on those numbers

in summary

the idea that this scheme (even if it was a good scheme and maybe you could make an argument about undocumented migrants etc) will stop the boats is literally insane, all it does is open 1 migrant hotel in Rawanda when you need at least 100

heh i love this (un)subtle shift in angle

clearly amit has received a diktat from his tozza overlords which dict7s that they have given up on the election and now all tozza minions must try 2 argue that all things that go well under the future labour govt r actually cos of the tozzas 😂🤣😂

Tories think the Rwanda plan is a vote winner. Labour know it is quite the opposite.

Tories need a big "look at what we achieved!!" moment before they call an election. They think it is is it. They don't realise the public will view their achievements like a toddler proudly pointing at a soft poo on a white rug.

Labour is hastening the election and giving the Tories the rope to hang themselves.

Jelly it will be a vote winner with the general public - IF it works and acts as a deterrent.

Probably unlikely in the time before an election. However you can see the logic from the government’s POV.

IF it works and acts as a deterrent

🤣 shirley there rn’t even proper imbeciles who think it might work? even the tozzas rn’t really pretending they think it will

if this is the measure of success then the tozzas r fooked
😂😂

gotta love how ‘barney’ thinks that just cos he’s self-interested smeg-encrusted toolbag, the “public” must b too

The voting public care about their own interests, not those of asylum seekers. This is news to you? The last few elections must have come as a real shock.

heh @ barney thinking that cos roughly 20% of the uk population voted like selfish khunts just as he did, that means every 1 of the ‘public’ r just as much of a selfish toolbag as he is

newsflash 4 barney: the vast maj of the population don’t think selfishly like u. they rn’t khunts like u. they r actually capable of independent thought, unlike u. get out of ur self-interested, entitled, pompous bubble and face the music - ur a well above average selfish toolbag and, while there r a few ppl like u which makes u unremarkably dull and unthinking, that doesn’t mean every 1 is like u. in fact, 4tun7ly, most ppl r quite unlike u. and thank fook 4 that eh

hopey helpy!
