The Role

We are looking for Mid-Level Associate to join our Commercial Sports team in London. You will be expected to demonstrate and continually develop top-tier legal expertise and outstanding industry knowledge.   You will have a natural interest in your clients' businesses, strategies, challenges, and opportunities and will partner closely with them by providing excellent, efficient service and valuable, independently minded insight.  An approach which combines high levels of commerciality without ever losing integrity is essential, as is a flexible and responsive approach to meeting client needs.

Day-to-day you will be involved in high quality work, often with an international slant. You will advise on a range of commercial sports contracts, including media rights, sponsorship, merchandising and licensing, joint ventures, and event staging agreements. There will also be opportunities to get involved with our fast-developing e-sports offering.

We believe the role represents an outstanding opportunity for a bright, entrepreneurial, and ambitious lawyer.

What you'll do

  • The successful candidate will work with an array of leading sports organisations, including national and international federations, competition organisers, clubs, sponsors, broadcasters, media agencies and individual athletes from across all sports.
  • You will be part of a close-knit team of Partners and Associates who are passionate about the law in this area. You will be given the opportunity and support to develop the skills to mentor, supervise and take responsibility for more junior associates and trainees. The Partners in this area are also highly supportive of business development and would support the successful candidate building their profile in this area, including winning and growing client relationships, attending pitches, speaking at conferences and article writing.
  • You will work with colleagues from across the firm to draw on their expertise in corporate, competition, tax, employment, immigration, intellectual property, data protection and other areas of law, with specific focus on the requirements of the sports sector.
  • The firm advises in a way that supports the client's strategic objectives whilst being practical and commercial and we would expect candidates to demonstrate their ability to provide advice in this way.
  • Further details of the Commercial practice group can be found on our website, or by clicking here:  http://www.twobirds.com/English/Expertise/Pages/Commercial.aspx and details of our Sports group can be found here; https://www.twobirds.com/en/sectors/media-entertainment-and-sport/sport

The main responsibilities of this role are outlined above, however this description is not exhaustive and the job holder may be required to undertake additional duties from time to time to ensure the smooth running of the department. The role may require some working outside our normal working hours of 9:30am- 5:30pm.

Your skills

Candidates will need to understand and have a passion for commercial and sports law.  You will have strong experience gained in a leading firm, or solid training followed by relevant sector experience in-house.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Excellent academic achievement with a minimum 2:1 degree.
  • Solid experience as a commercial or corporate lawyer, gained within a comparable environment and at an appropriate level.
  • A genuine and demonstrable passion for sports.
  • A desire to be working for a truly international firm and work on cross border matters (which may involve international travel).

In addition, we expect all our Associates to demonstrate:

  • Flexibility, supporting matters with a broad range of legal issues.
  • The ability to efficiently manage and prioritise work.
  • Knowledge of key areas of the law, providing clear, precise, practical advice.
  • The ability to use initiative and build confidence amongst others in your capability.
  • The ability to liaise effectively with other fee earners from within the group, but also to liaise and coordinate with fee earners from other relevant disciplines and jurisdictions as required.
  • Delegation and supervisory skills where appropriate.
  • Being keen to work in a challenging, team-based environment.
  • The willingness and ability to support business development activity, participating in development and maintenance of client relationships and identifying business opportunities.
  • A commitment to regularly update their own technical expertise and to achieve continuous improvement and development.
  • The ability to contribute to the general upkeep of the group (precedents, or know-how generally).
