Linklaters New World has run into trouble already after the firm gave one associate a corporate hospitality box at the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Despite claiming that the current economic circumstances are so dire that the firm has to lay over 150 members of staff, it seems it can still rustle up the couple of thousand necessary for a private box at the races. This has gone down predictably badly with those who've been laid off, and put the associate who's been given the box in a slightly awkward position.

A spokeswoman for Linklaters said that the box had originally been booked for client entertainment, and had been made available to the rest of the firm when clients dropped out.
