The Muttsog leaving us has deprived the family of a gelling agent at a time when it has been most fractured. She would have been a good resourse of hugs. Vicarious loving gestures can be transmitted via the dog. The act of cuddling displays your need even if you cannot admit it to others and let them in. Everyone has a go to heal their own pain. Sometimes two people who struggle to express love or hurt to each other can align in the warmth of deflection. The dog becomes the vector of healing.
When I say that Gwendog sat by Young G, it was more that she sat on Young G. Gwendog was quite a lump and her bottom felt very heavy as it landed on your arm, leg, lap or whatever happened to be in the way. She would then sigh theatrically before settling down.
Young G went through a phase when showering regularly was a problem. During that time Gwendog would wash Young G's face and arms perhaps for 15 minutes at a time.

Emotional support horses are a thing and in certain states in the us you can’t refuse entry to a hotel with a horse

Rod Campbell wrote what is perhaps the definitive book on this subject. A lifetime of study.

I’d go for something unusual like a Honey Badger

Aren’t honey badgers notoriously bad tempered and violent?

I find that calming (when it’s directed at others who it could be trained to target)

You can take an emotional support horse into Disneyworld (but you can't make it drink).

I would go for a human, a 60 year old Jamie Doran and a German shepherd.

The late Gwendog was a support dog for Young G. Always knew when Young G was having a particularly bad time and would sit by her.

The dog currently gracing our home has been an immense help for the little one.
