This June, The Bike Project are challenging you to cycle the same number of miles as a refugee's journey to safety. As you go, The Bike Project will send you updates so you can learn what they were experiencing at certain milestones along the route.

Use your Refugee Routes challenge to fundraise and raise awareness for The Bike Project. Every pound you raise will support the ongoing journeys of refugees here in the UK. You could cycle solo or if you’d like to bring in some competitive spirit, get your firm involved as a team!

'Having a bike here reminds us of our previous life. We feel freedom! Our bikes allow us to explore London, be independent and see healthy.' Katya, bike recipient, Bike Buddies participant

THE CHALLENGE

How it works:

1. Choose your route

How far can you cycle in June? Could you take on 103 miles from Ukraine to Poland? Or 307 miles from Tunisia to Italy?

2. Clock your miles

As you cycle, you'll hear from the refugee's experiences along your route. Once signed up, you’ll have access to our handy dashboard, which can be used to register your miles, or you can even attach your Strava account. You can include the miles you use if you cycle to work, or even on the cycling machine at the gym!

3. Support refugees

After arriving to the UK, a refugee's journey is far from over. Fundraise to provide a bike to help them on their way. £150 raised would be enough to fund a bike for an adult refugee.

THE CHARITY

At The Bike Project, we refurbish second-hand bikes and donate them to refugees and people seeking asylum in the UK. There are an estimated 38 million unused bikes in the UK. Every year 27,500 bikes are abandoned in London alone. Our mechanics assess and refurbish the bikes in our workshops in Birmingham and London, before they are then donated to refugees and people seeking asylum. A bike can be much more than a means of transport; it can provide joy, independence, community and access to vital services. So far, we have donated over 11,000 bikes since 2013.

"Doing a challenge like Refugee Routes helps keep the conversation going and has a tangible positive impact for refugees in the UK." Eleanor, Hattie and Meg, fundraisers
