Food price fears as Brexit import charges revealed https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-68726852

ACTUALLY THIS IS ANOTHER BREXIT BENEFIT!!

In a statement the government said the flat-rate charge was at the "bottom end of the range which we consulted with industry on".

It said the charge was designed to "recover the costs of operating our world-class border facilities where essential biosecurity checks will protect our food supply, farmers and environment against costly disease outbreaks entering the UK through the short straits".

WORLD CLASS!!

WORLD CLASS!!

it's kind of fascinating to watch a whole bunch of people who thought the EU was stopping their personal vision of britain coming true slowly reaslising that their dreams are just deeply politically unpopular or silly

so now you have this group of people who either want some sort of technocratic silicon valley state, an ultra liberal free trade centre or a neo imperial federation forced to support brexit under a labour mega maj

it's going to be an interesting few years, it's quite possible a 2034 Tory gov will be elected on a "join the single market" ticket

meanwhile everyone in blighty has to suck it up take higher prices and poorer living conditions than their neighbours

probably something along the lines that this is a good thing, the scums can eat cheddar and like it and aspiring to join the metropolitan elites who can afford imported mozzarella and camembert will drive them to excel

Why can’t we eat more domestic produce?

________________________________________________________________

you're very welcome to

but you shouldn't be forced to eat domestic food by protectionist conservative politicians jacking up the price of imports - because then you are just doing over the consumer/voters to satisfy your cronies and prop up unprofitable enterprises

funny how brexiteers who were supposedly advocates of free trade are now keen on protectionism.

a lot of the brexiteers only pushed Brexit because they imagined it would let them sidestep the fundamental unpopularity and unworkability of their preferred policy agenda.

The UK isn't a libertarian 'paradise' because voters don't want it to be, and institutions are sufficiently robust to prevent even a fanatic like Truss from imposing it on them - not because EU bureaucrats were thwarting the will of the people for some bad parody of Singapore.

I wonder if the stock market will disregard its usual sell in May and go away  this year, so as to give Workio a summer bounce? Or just let the economy tank a bit further before he’s kicked out.

The fee, known as the "common user charge", will apply to animal products, plants and plant products entering the UK from the EU through the Port of Dover and the Eurotunnel at Folkestone.

If it is so specific the solution would seem to be to come in through Porstmouth, Southampton, Shoreham, etc.

Dalek04 Apr 24 10:28

Great, it should be possible to do without them then. Equally, I don’t really care about these checks.

sadly that only works when you have mutual recognition of standards and the goods coming in are made for the EU market

otherwise you get all kinds of shitt dumped on your market (france for example, merrily chlorine washes chicken for export out of the EU) and that's before you get into the voodoo of when are goods customs cleared into the market

this is the problem with conservative brexiteers, they have no idea how to make what they want actually work

you wanna half in on a hovercraft service, Normandy to Brighton or something?

sumosailhoverco

I dont understand Risky, are you saying that while we were in the EU our customs officials were yomping around the EU carrying out checks instead of at the border?

I'm in Sumo.

Guy the largely died out because the Chunnel is just as a quick, doesn't get stopped by bad weather and doesn't make everyone vom in a moderate sea state.

I think you can still get a (passenger) hovercraft to the Isle of Wight if you want a hovercraft fix.

I used to love getting the cross channel hovercraft when I was a kid. Sails is correct about why they stopped being used for cross channel purposes (I think I remember reading somewhere that they were also hit by changes in duty free rules sometime in the 1990's as it reduced the number of people doing booze runs to France)

Vehicle capacity mostly.

As a former burgher of Folkestone and Calais I can say that the day passenger traffic (which the hovercraft largely catered for) has dwindled to almost nothing. This isn’t a brexit thing btw, it has been that way for about 15 years.

Lorry drivers and operators tend to prefer the ferry to the tunnel because it is cheaper and counts towards their rest time

They were a bit too bumpy and unreliable as often cancelled by wind. And flight times (they were pretty nippy tbf) - were almost too short tk flog duty free etc on. And not good for freight and people moving towards flying holidays.

They were super cool though. Would love to go on one again.
