Hidden gems on the telly/streamy box

The stuff that's a bit under the radar.

Reccy it here.

I'll start:

The Patient - Disney+

Steve Carrell is a therapist who wakes up chained to the floor in the basement room of his patient - played by Domnal Gleeson - who is a murdering psychopath who needs a therapist he can be open with. 5 episodes, and it's wonderfully brooding and compelling.

Channel 4 is good hunting ground and I would recommend Walter Presents for the (admittedly very few) non crime dramas.

The Adulterer

Seaside Hotel

Stand out winners

Lol at multi Emmy and Golden Globe award winning Schitts Creek being under the radar. It is good mind.

The Leftovers - insanely good drama. 2% of the world suddenly disappear.

Love/Hate - Irish gangster drama

Schtisel - insanely good Haredi drama/comedy

A whole lifetime with Jamie Demetriou - v off the wall Netflix one off comedy

Ellie and Nastasia

Similar to Beef in style is The Brothers Sun which is also good.

I haven’t seen Schitts Creek so it must still be somewhat lower key than other big shows (the name just makes it seem not very fun).

just started Godless last night and think it might have legs.

I was decidedly angry The Leftovers made me waste so much time watching it all. Read an interview with the 'maker' (?) who admitted all the stuff I hoped would be explained eventually was just guff. I was warned it had the potential to be a bit like Lost in that respect and should have heeded.

I'm 2 eps into Furies. Yet to make up mind. Seems kinda derivative and a bit hard to follow the intrigue between the gangsters (maybe I'm just not interested enough),

+1 for Schitts Creek. Perfectly-sized morsels of feel-good comedy.

Enjoyed Brothers Sun. Some very well choreographed action scenes, if that's your thing.

Mr Queen on Netflix.

Modern day male Korean chef… wakes up in the body of a Joseon era queen.

Has a rough idea about the history of that time. Beautiful costumes, well filmed and interesting commentary on how we never really know the ‘truth’ of history.

Another vote for Fisk, Australian comedy about a solicitor on netflix

Astrid: Murder in Paris, French crime series about an autistic women who helps the police on Walter presents (More4)

Superstore like PP mentions is lovely. Like most US sitcoms it gets weaker towards the end. On Netflix and ITVX
