I can’t help but laugh at lawyers…

It makes me laugh that they don’t think this lifestyle is abnormal and so unhealthy. I’m not saying I’m better than anyone else, but I do feel somewhat comforted by the fact that I don’t value myself based on how many hours I’ve billed in a week. If you don’t laugh, you’ll cry because it’s so bizarre. Am I the only one inside the legal sphere that sees this?

Having regard to number of billable hours recorded over any period isn’t the main problem. That’s just a proxy for how hard/efficiently some lawyers feel that they worked. The problems with private practice were discussed (at length) on the threads re: Vanessa Ford about a month ago.

You can be a laywer without valuing yourself on the number of hours you've worked in a week.  I have no idea how many hours I do in a week as my timesheet simply always adds up to the mandated minimum 37.5 hours.

Are there firms operating on other models - ie fixed fee? I know they do for straightforward things like residential conveyances, but does anyone do it for big ticket deals?

An awful lot of transactional corporate work is done for a set fee by reference to an agreed scope.

To the extent that work outside the scope is required then an extension to the set fee is agreed or it is done by hourly rate (but usually the former).
