Improving London's public transport

What one thing would you do which is reasonably affordable and uses technology available today to improve London's public transport?

I would create a "fast bus" route networkc which overlaps with the establish network. Basically like bus routes but which have greater distances between stops and I'd use big data to work out the most efficient routes and give them priority paths or lane.

So maybe a fast bus which has five or six stops between Stratford and Heathrow.

And maybe sky cycle lanes - modular attachments to go along existing railway lines plus some purpose built ones.

Extend the underground into south east and south west London.  There are only four lines that operate south of the river and two of those only have two stops south of the river and one only has four stops.  I'm ignoring the Jubilee line which basically just runs east along the river itself.

Agree there should be massive investment in off road cycle lanes so that bikes can then be banned from all main roads. The existing buses should taken off the road and replaced with far more frequent, smaller buses that don't interrupt the flow of traffic so much and with multiple additional routes focussed on travel around zones 2 to 6 rather than just into and out of town. Do that and you might just make family life in London without a car practical and that would be a huge step forward.

The Elizabeth line isn't 5-6 stops. Literally thinking: Stratford, Liverpool Street, Oxfords Circus, Turnham Green, Heathrow

Plus it would be a bus and there'd be useful "long haul" routes connecting all sorts of bits of London.

Maybe another going round the circular connecting suburbs without going into Central. I dunno. Big data.

Also- cycles banned from roads? Why though? If they can get joined up quiet/back roads doing as good a job then there cycling on major arteries would naturally disappear.

I believe there are some buses in the outer zones that are meant to link people in those areas aren’t there?

Not sure if there are express buses that skip some stops but I’m sure I heard something along those lines

Stru - They have the 'super loop' now which is a start but it is aimed at a slightly different problem.

We need to ban cyclists (and large buses) from main roads so we can get those roads moving at reasonable speeds again.

There are already express bus routes

The single best way of improving London public transport is ensuring its employees turn up to work per their contract of employment

Tax the absolute bejeesus out of cars, Singapore style but levied as a proportion of wealth so that they are equitably unaffordable. Use the money raised to subsidize bikes, e-cargo bikes, and alternative transport for people who can't use active or semi active transport.

There are a number of reasons why South London doesn't have that many tube lines, the soil is not good for tunneling.  And, it's already served with very good overground, bus and train links.

I woud lie to see an outer orbital rail line roughly similar in position to the m25  that connects the main lines allowing for cross country trips that dont involve changing and yomping across central london.

Eddie it has a similar bus and overground service to north London.  There’s a reason the Northern Line is crowded because of people using buses and overground to get to it.

Driverless tube trains!  Would save a fortune.

The Victoria, Jubilee and Eliz beth lines have been automated since they were opened. Northern, Circle/District/Hammersmith and City are now automated too. Thameslink will be in the not too distant. DLR obvs entirely driverless. The only reason the automated lines have 'drivers' is to open and close doors and for safety reasons (and on occasions when the automation goes down requiring a driver to take over).

The main benefit of full automation for the tube would be to enable investment to run the trains more regularly during peak times providing better and more consistent service.

Sails, perhaps I'm just lucky in my location then.

I can get tube or overground from Canada Water or I can walk to Deptford Station and get a train in to London Bridge, or if there's a strike on, I can walk to Greenland Dock and get the river bus.

What I would like to be able to do though is go from Rotherhithe directly across to Richmond / Twickenham without having to change at Waterloo which is an utter pain

I think London Transport is generally pretty good so my one thing is to ban the incessant, drivelling, brain-dead-dystopian messages that I’m forced to endure on every journey and make me want to kill someone.

As if the constant ‘See it say it sort it’ wasn’t bad enough, my train has started announcing that aggression and violence to their staff will not be tolerated under ANY circumstances. And on the underground I have to listen to the recorded voice of an annoying 5 year old girl reminding us to hold onto the fkin escalator handrail.

Just tell us which stop we’re at and explain why we’re stuck in a tunnel. That’ll be all thanks.

I would stop the almost literal robbery of charging over £6 for a single ticket in zone 1 if you buy one from a machine.   Why?  The only people who will do this are people who for whatever reason have to buy a physical ticket or the ignorant.  Why are they being gouged?

More money. They definitely need to spend more money on public transport in London which is woefully underfunded. I'd gladly pay 90% income tax to make this happen. It actually embarrasses me the pittance that is spent in London as opposed to the rest of the country.

Eddie Canada Water is that stretch along the river that isn't really south London.  The overground from Balham is great for Victoria which is 12 minutes away and faster than the Tube but to go the other direction on that loop to London Bridge takes a minimum of 41 minutes with one change versus 17 minutes on the underground.  Consequently half of south east London gets a quick overground to Balham to get the underground to London Bridge.

when was the last time you were in Canada Water?

2 minute walk from the Station to Southwark Park.  The canal walk is directly next to the station.

Stave Hill conservation area is five minutes away along with the beautiful Russia Dock Park.  People take pride in the area so it isn't covered in graffiti.  The new town centre is taking shape and not long now until they demolish and replace that awful 1980s shopping centre.  I believe the Printworks is up for redevelopment also.

I used to live round there and it had a lot going for it then. Amazing (amazing) library at Canada Water. The Ship & Whale yon side of Greenland Dock did an excellent Sunday dinner and had a full set of dominoes. 10 minute walk to The Den for some football. Ma Po probably still the best Chinese food I've ever had. Good boozers by the river in Rotherhithe. Big Tesco. Jubilee Line to the West End, Wharf and Westfield. Overground for hipsters and the City.

It lacked restaurants and nightlife but I guess things may have changed since I left.

Yeah Pinkus, I love the Ship & Whale.  I'm far from being a Millwall supporter but I can tell when they score sitting in my flat as they make a hell of a lot of noise... I've only eaten in Ma Po once but I'd had a few pints so don't remember it being that brilliant (although many people tell me it is).  Loads of new restaurants in the area but they tend to be quite expensive for what you get.  I've been living here for 8 years and gentrification has been doing it's thing...
