Toney and Watkins

Even if he bombs against belgium, i think toney is a better bet than Watkins

Agree with Toney from what I've seen so far - holds the ball up better (more Kanesque in style), more experienced and more clinical.  They both need more game time though, and should get it.  Kane is a known quantity, Southgate needs to get a better handle on what the other no.9s can and can't do.

Toney, because he's more capable of the unexpected than Watkins. Neither inspire that much confidence, tbh. If Kane gets crocked, England won't be half the threat.

Watkins is extremely limited. If Kane is injured we should put Bellingham up top as a false 9 and play without an established striker. Saka, Bellingham and Foden have enough goals in them without using a precious starting spot on a weak player. Toney is interesting as an option off the bench.

If we play Watkins (whom I rate in terms of workrate, pressing, pitch coverage etc albeit not the best finisher) the system really needs to change to something more like how Emery is playing at Villa - more fluid, moving the ball forward quicker, letting Watkins and indeed the whole front three (Saka etc) use their speed and yes, more high risk.  We actually have the players to do this - but not the manager, alas. Agree with TSB that for Southgate's system, Toney is a better fit.

Watkins is probably a more complete and schooled forward but Toney has a one off original quality.

They and Bowen and C Wilson, plus Rashford give us depth at striker, but Kane remains our only guy in that position with business-end-of-tournament quality.
