What should be in your resignation letter?

Err why? You go to your boss and say I'm leaving here's why, they make a half hearted attempt to keep you. You then do the notice letter to make it official. Before you leave you maybe get an exit interview.

There once was a lawyer called ‘me’

Who gave in his notice, you see.

It was dated today,

took effect straight away,

And left him entirely khunt-free.

Yours free of copyright. My gift to you.

I didn't even have a letter when I left my last firm. Just called up the head of the team and informally after a couple of months later. Did all the "thanks for the opportunity stuff, you're so great" in person.

Don't see why you wouldn't explain, any good boss would want to know. Yes exit interviews are lol but just part of the process and as you want to leave on good terms you'd go along with it.

So advice is just fine, thanks .

I just drop the letter as once I’ve decided I’m going I’m going to don’t want the awful half hearted attempt to get me to stay.  I like to do it on my way out on a Friday.

You're resigning. Calculate last day is x. Thank you for opps etc. Few lines tops.

Speak to boss just before as a heads up and can go into more detail re reasons then and in exit interview.

"Terrible advice would be to simply hand it in cold as a total surprise."

Do we think me having numerous "appointments" and being sporadically overdressed is enough? Or should I be dropping more hints...?

I didn't do an exit interview for my last move. Was already on secondment at new job. Gave notice Thursday and finished on Friday. New job started Monday.

Next time I will try to take a couple of weeks out inbetween but I said that last time too.

"Do we think me having numerous "appointments" and being sporadically overdressed is enough? Or should I be dropping more hints...?"

Are you trying to leave or just want attention?

Presumably you are a lawyer so if you have an issue you have the minerals to talk to your boss about it, no?

If you want out, who cares if they know or not, before you tell them you are resigning?

Davos there are some issues you know won't be solved by a chat especially when you've already had that chat directly and indirectly a number of times and nothing has changed...

At the moment it should probably say "I am feeling bold in the face of an imminent recession and the drying up of the vast waves of helicopter money that have fuelled a boom at law firms, but please don't fill the vacancy".

It should be a straightforward notice period and date of leaving and optionally a short sentence thanking them. Any further chat if needed could be done separately.
