La Relais de Venise, with two London outlets (the City and Marylebone), is an international ‘chain’ and one French import that we welcome with open arms. Come back Thierry - all is forgiven.

Eating doesn’t get much better than this for an average chap: Quick service; steak cooked to perfection, cut up for you and kept warm; fries; red wine; and good value pricing. If only all the chairs were chaise lounges - we would never move.

An artist's impression of a French beef dinner

RdV is the place to come for when you’re feeling all lawyered out and need some no-nonsense refuelling. You don’t even need to waste time reading a menu - all they do here is a first course of walnut salad followed by a fantastic steak in their special sauce. An absolute bargain at £19. The only drawback is the no booking policy that can sometimes mean you have to queue for a table - but don’t worry, it’s quick service and a queue is only a good sign of a quality product.

The salad is tasty, but the highlight of the RdV experience is the steak which is cut up for you and served in halves - you eat the first half whilst the second half of your steak is kept warm to ensure you only eat your meat in the best possible state - a simple touch that surprisingly makes the experience all the better. It's lovingly bathed in a house special secret sauce that keeps people salivating at the memory.

After all that, if you have space, try the ice-cream filled profiteroles - you won’t be disappointed as this is a slightly less simple dish that they still do brilliantly.

Best of all, the meal, including wine and coffee, was an entirely reasonable £30 each for our table of 4. If only every restaurant in London was like this...
