A stork has been arrested in Egypt on suspicion of spying.

It was captured in the Qena region by a fisherman on the Nile who spotted an electronic device on its wing and took it to police.

Concerned officers thought the device might be surveillance equipment or a bomb, and called in veterinary experts. Ayman Abdallah, head of Qena's veterinary services, said a committee determined that the device was not part of a plot to spy on some reeds or blow up a fish, but a wildlife tracker used by French scientists to follow the bird's migratory route.

The tracker stopped working when it left France, which Abdallah said absolved the stork from claims it might be a spy. However the stork is being kept in prison until officials obtain permission from state prosecutors to release it.

It's not the first time that Egyptians have suspected animals of espionage. Earlier this year a security guard informed Egyptian police that he'd found a pigeon carrying microfilm. And in 2010 the blame was put on Israeli-controlled, GPS-guided sharks for a series of coastal attacks.

The headline was very misleading. It was not "arrested" and obviously not in a "prison". Something suspicious was seen and taken i. For further examination. How insulting to the intelligence of Egyptian people. Shame on you.
