A solicitor has been stuck off after going on the run when an £8million mortgage fraud came to light.

Mahmood Ali worked at Montague Mason until the SRA shut it down over breaches of the solicitors accounts rules. Four men were jailed last month after pleading guilty to fraud, reports the Gazette. Apparently they made false mortgage applications totalling £7.8million, and got Abbey and Birmingham Midshires to transfer the money to Montague Mason. But Ali did a runner, and he's still AWOL.

    Where's Mahmood?

Ali, unsurprisingly, failed to attend a hearing of the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal on 23rd March. He was struck off in his absence and ordered to pay £15,000 costs: which will frankly be the least of his problems when the police catch up with him.
