A high profile criminal barrister is suing the State of Victoria and the Police Commissioner, claiming her life fell apart after she helped to investigate a police detective.

Nicola Gobbo, a defence barrister in a number of underworld cases, agreed to help police with an investigation into the murder of a police informer. She wore a concealed bug in order to record a conversation with a former detective who has since been charged.

Gobbo says the police assured her she would benefit from a witness protection programme, and for any loss of earnings. But she claims she was left without the protection she was promised, and is now in hiding and has been forced to give up her career without compensation. She says she used to earn $250,000 a year and she "remains in fear for my life since agreeing to give evidence for Victoria Police."

The Australian underworld makes Nicola Gobbo an offer she can't refuse

Gobbo says that she had it was "no alternative but to issue proceedings and to seek justice" and has filed a claim at the Supreme Court this week.
