Former High Court Justice Michael Kirby has labeled Seven Network journos "serial homophobes".

The highly-respected judge was speaking at the TEDx Sydney conference last week. His comments were in relation to the secret filming by the Seven Network of former Minster for Transport David Campbell leaving a gay club in Kensington, Sydney. The Minister subsequently resigned.

Kirby also referred to Seven's run in with close friend and former president of the NSW Law Society, the late John Marsden, who successfully sued Seven in 2002 for defamation. Marsden died in 2006.

Kirby has been openly gay since the late 90s and has often spoken publicly in support of gay rights. His latest comments have sparked furious debate over the journalistic ethics involved according to popular media site, mUmRELLA.

Head of news at Seven Peter Meakin said “I’m disappointed that Mr Kirby should feel that way. I didn’t think sexual preference was the issue.”
