Whilst the recent New Zealand earthquake may have led to mercenary behaviour at some firms, it seems to have brought out the fighting spirit in at least one.

The disruption following an earthquake might be expected to spell a few days at home on the couch, eating toast and watching daytime TV. Not so for the lucky lawyers of NZ firm Duncan Cotterill, however. Despite major damage to its Christchurch offices, the firm was determined to make sure its lawyers remained firmly focussed on fee-earning according to a report in The Australian .

After the Christchurch office was declared unsafe by engineers, the firm considered flying its lawyers out to other offices before deciding to instruct staff to work from home using the firm's remote log-in system. Sounds simple enough, although this did involve an act of minor heroism from the firm's Chief Executive Janice Frederic who, along with the firm's IT manager, re-entered the damaged offices to reboot the computer system.

The Christchurch office has still not been given the all clear but Frederic confirmed that with staff working from home everything is "really working as normal". The office, however, "will need some redecoration".
