Amidst large scale job losses and departures, Mallesons has admitted to RollonFriday that it has been using recruitment materials featuring the smiling faces of lawyers who have already left the firm.

Prior to its voluntary redundancy program last September, Mallesons is alleged to have started a "managing out" process. And over the last financial year the firm's associate population has plummeted. A spokeswoman for the firm told RollOnFriday that the number of associates who departed - by way of redundancy and "natural attrition" - was "fewer than 200" over the last year. However, these figures are inconsistent with the June 2010 AFR report - provided to RollOnFriday by, er, Mallesons - which puts the figure of associate leavers at a rather higher 227.

Whichever figure is accurate, they are both rather higher than the 100 who were reported to have been given the elbow as a result of the firm's official redundancy programme. And, in a further twist, some of the lawyers who were given the tap on the shoulder have suffered the double indignity of seeing their photos in Mallesons' "join us" material, according to FirmSpy.

RollOnFriday raised this with the firm and a spokeswoman confirmed "You are quite right about the photos on our website, we are removing them and are in the process of shooting new pics for our new website we are launching in the next few months."

Presumably there was no great rush to update its recruitment materials, as the firm says that all its 2010 grad positions have been filled through last year's summer clerk programme. But Mallesons says that it is starting to recruit laterals again, and it will also be on the hunt for 200 clerks firmwide.
