Simmons & Simmons has again been recognised as the UK's top law firm for lesbians, gays and bisexuals, coming 19th in Stonewall's 2011 ranking of top employers.

The results were released by Stonewall at a ceremony at Herbert Smith (the 50th most friendly workplace) on Wednesday night. And they make for reasonable reading in the legal sector. In 2010, only four law firms made it into the top 100. Come 2011, and that number has increased to a more impressive seven, with Hogan Lovells (42), Baker & MacKenzie (45, and winner of the most improved employer award) and Irwin Mitchell (93) joining Simmons, Herbies, Pinsent Masons and Eversheds.

And not only are more firms appearing, but they're moving up in the world, too. Eversheds jumped from 85th to 72nd, Herbies from 56th to 50th, and Pinsent Masons from 36th to 30th. In fact, only Simmons fell slightly, drifting from 2010's 15th place to its current standing. Although it's still seventh on the list of top private sector employers. A spokesman for the firm said "we are very proud to participate in Stonewall’s comprehensive index. It is great to see seven law firms ranked in the top 100 LGB-friendly employers - law can indeed be a welcoming workplace for members of the LGB community, whether fee earners or business services staff".

    That Stonewall ceremony in full.

It looks like elsewhere in the City things are moving a little more quickly. The Lloyds Banking Group came second overall, Goldman Sachs sixth, Barclays tenth and Accenture 15th. But at least like law firms are heading in the right direction.
