Doh! A partner at Shearman & Sterling has sent an email to both colleagues and clients thoughtfully describing an economist working for the European Union as someone who is "very young" and "very pretty". Good work 70s throwback man!

The Brussels-based partner was responding to an email asking whether anyone knew anything about Annemiek Wilpshaar, the latest appointee to EU antitrust chief Joaquin Almunia's cabinet. His reply, copied to lawyers at other firms and several clients, was as follows:

"She was Jorge Padilla's student in Barcelona. We are told that she does not know much on IP but is strong on financial markets. She is very young, very clever & very pretty."

No doubt she also dresses demurely, has lovely smelling hair and only speaks when she's spoken to.

They'll be wanting to wear trousers next

One recipient of the email commented that the email illustrated "why so many women prefer to bail from private practice before reaching partnership".

The partner told RollOnFriday that "my comments should be taken in context. And by contrast with Ms Wilpshaar, I'm neither young, nor pretty". True.

I'll leave you all to judge the extent of her prettiness but she also can't spell analysis

I think RoF is right to criticise this partner for saying she is 'very pretty' - that is totally unacceptable. She is clearly only 'quite pretty', though he could have perhaps added 'she has a vivacious smile'....and, as I think more about it, actually, I do like her hair. And, there's something quite beguiling in that look of hers. Actually, the more I think about it, maybe she is not just very pretty but beautiful......do you know if she is single?

How is the fact she is pretty relevant? If I were asked about an S&S partner and said - he is very fat and has a paunch and no hair is that going to help us work together? I suppose it might mean we send very fat members of staff so they can feel comfortable but really he ought to know better.

Also don't be ageist. I was very young when I qualified but that was because I was very good ( graduated at 20 etc) The young can be as good as or better than the old.

I wonder if these two are connected?

What's the problem with the partner's email? Was he supposed to lie about her skills, age, or aspect? If you have a problem with the fact he said she's "pretty" you can get lost - freedom of speech you clown.
