Unlike most weekend athletes and gym-addicts, we used to go to the gym wearing whichever free t-shirt we happened to find lying around the office. We would then use said t-shirt until it was dotted with holes and the logo faded after being bleached by our rancid sweat. This was because that we consider the gym a place of evil. Somewhere to go, ritually hurt yourself for 30-45 minutes, before escaping to the closest burger joint.

During that fleeting intermission in the gym between fattening ourselves up, our clothing was often the last thing on our minds. How wrong we were. Wearing the right gear can help you work out better (which in turn helps you to feel better after those little sweat sessions).

No one makes fun of the Rof Dog

Don't get us wrong, compression gear has been around a while making big names for new companies (Under Armour, Easton, Skins as well as the big boys Nike and Adidas). We're not saying it's anything new - we're just saying we're recent converts. Compression gear helps keep your fledgling muscles warm reducing the risk of strain and the effect of fatigue. It helps you work harder for longer; that fact alone brings us out in a sweat. The gear also helps wick away moisture quickly reducing chances of chafing and rashes; all great news though we'll miss the talc. Even after your exertions, you're liable to find your body recovering quicker ready for the next session. Annoying.

So, compression gear is a sporting must and, with half a dozen or so brands you'll be spoilt for choice as they're all fairly similar in looks and, arguably, technology. We've gone for the brilliant PlayerLayer.

We know the name makes it sound like Usher's new studio album, but it is a relatively new British entrant to a competitive market and we think their products are worth supporting - especially because they also do excellent ski-layers. Currently available in a small range of colours, they can be personalised with your name (something not available elsewhere) and are seriously good gear primarily popular with school and university kids as opposed to ageing desk jockeys. Don't let that stop you though - get yourself some gear and look forward to your next gym session.
