Burges Salmon has persuaded a raft of law firms to look into taking on trainees who've been left unemployed following the collapse of Halliwells.

Five firms immediately signed up to the scheme, The Lawyer reports. Since then, RollOnFriday can confirm that a further seven firms have agreed to try to take on an extra trainee to help out the Halliwells' waifs and strays, and another dozen are also considering whether to sign up. Burges Salmon wouldn't name those participating, but confirmed that they included a range of firms from small, regional partnerships to Magic Circle outfits.

Helen Scott-Lawler, a partner at Burges Salmon, told RollOnFriday that the scheme had been set up "because we just felt it was the right thing to do", and said that her firm would look into taking on a trainee too.

14 trainees who either worked at the bust firm or were due to join it this month have handed over their CVs for consideration. But Scott-Lawler said that only three of the 2011 joiners had signed up, presumably because many are out of the country and are unaware of the scheme's existence. They should contact [email protected].

Law firms who might be able to help out should also email Holly for more details of the scheme.
