Eversheds has launced a new scheme in which it offers its staff £500 each month for the best business development idea. And the individual who comes up with the top scheme over the course of a year will pocket a generous £20,000.

The firm has given the idea the buzzy caption of an "Innovation Forum". The arrangement will be open to everyone from support staff to senior partners. RollOnFriday expects paradigm shifts throughout the Eversheds network and can't see a no-brainer like this getting kicked into the long grass.

And 110% innovators have already stepped up to the plate. Winning ideas already implemented include the creation of a firm-wide business development database. That sounds like a reasonable first step in developing business, although perhaps low-hanging fruit rather than truly pushing the envelope. So RollOnFriday is happy to get the ball rolling by running the following business development concepts up a flagpole:

1. Making four rounds of redundancies at statutory minimum pay is unlikely to help a firm's reputation.
2. Paying top dolla for a report that the Magic Circle has lost its value is unlikely to convince anyone of anything much
3. And for God's sake stop putting stupid pictures of a plasticine woman being stalked by a man with a bulge in his crotch on your website.
