Field Fisher Waterhouse is the latest contender for the Eversheds Cup for bizarre legal branding, after it applied to register a trademark for its "Virtuous Triangle" strategy.

The three year strategy apparently sets outs FFW's plans for expansion across its three core areas. Which explains the triangle bit, if not the virtuous bit. The firm is clearly very proud of its new creation, as it has protected its "Virtuous Triangle" by registering it as a trademark, The Lawyer reported

A spokesman said that "we aren't really expecting anyone to steal it, but we're a firm with a leading IP/trademark practice (which is an important part of the strategy) - wouldn't you therefore expect us to trademark the name of our new strategy?" Well, not really, to be honest.

    A virtuous triangle yesterday

The firm is slightly behind the curve here - Lovells was first out of the blocks by registering its "Mexican Wave" strategy way back in 2004.
