There is so much bad feeling at Halliwells that even a humble invitation to some leaving drinks is met with abuse.

Partner Niall Edwards emailed all staff to say that he and a number of his colleagues in Sheffield were departing in August, and they wanted to invite everyone who could make it to their leaving party:

Dear All,

Many of you will be aware that a number of teams from the Sheffield office are moving on to pastures new in August.

The vast majority of us have worked for Halliwells for many years, some of us over a decade, and we would all dearly like to sink a few jars with our friends and colleagues before we move on.

We would like to invite everyone, firmwide, who can make it to our Leaving Party in Sheffield on Thursday 22 July 2010 after work. We thought it best to get this in peoples' diaries as soon as possible. It will be very much in the traditional format - drinks, food and see where we end up! Details to follow. If anyone needs to sort overnight accommodation we can no doubt sort something out.

Please forgive us if we have unintentionally ommitted anyone from this email. If you can make it, please do.

Hope to see you there.

Niall and all in Sheffield who are leaving.

Sounds reasonable? Not to fellow partner Mark Halliwell who sent the following to all:

I don't know who you are and won't be attending accordingly

I suggest you keep your invitation to your friends and depart with a semblance of grace

Regards

Mark

MARK HALLIWELL

That's very gracious of you, Mark.

And a tip of the hat to partner David Vayro, who then replied to all to say that he seconded Halliwell's comments.

The firm declined to comment.
