Pannick Tackle

Man City brings on Lord Pannick KC in defence.

Manchester City has instructed David Pannick KC of Blackstone Chambers to defend more than 100 charges brought by the Premier League. It is rumoured that the eminent barrister could earn as much per week as the club's top players.

The football club has been referred to an independent commission for alleged breaches of Premier League financial rules from 2009 to 2018.

If found guilty, it is understood that Manchester City could face the ultimate sanction of demotion from the Premier League. And while Haaland may be capable of scoring a hat-trick against Man Utd, could he do it on a cold, rainy night in Stoke?

In a statement this week Manchester City said it is "surprised by the issuing of these alleged breaches of the Premier League Rules" and "welcomes the review of this matter by an independent Commission, to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of its position."

Pannick also represented City when it overturned a Champions League ban imposed by UEFA in 2020, and also in 2021 when the club challenged the Premier League's right to access certain documents and information in a High Court case.

The star silk is no stranger to high profile cases in recent times, having represented BoJo over the investigation as to whether the former PM misled parliament.

There has been breathless speculation in the press as to how much Pannick could be paid by Manchester City. It has been rumoured that he typically charges around £5k an hour, and that he has been known to request double that amount, according to The Lawyer.

If he were paid at the top end of that scale, Pannick could potentially earn around £80k a day or £400k a week, putting him in the same bracket as the Premier League's highest paid player, Kevin De Bruyne. One of them crosses to people in the box, while the other cross-examines people in the box. And on that tenuous link, it's back to you in the studio, Gary.

coincidentally this works out as the same hourly rate as Kevin de Bruyne

*assuming de Bruyne also doing 12 hour days, 7 days a week.....

Lord Pannick's a terrific prospect, but I don't think he can be expected to fit straight into the first team.  I think they should send him out on loan to Port Vale for a season to get some game in his legs, then look again.

Nobody is worth paying £5,000 an hour. For anything. Ever. Never mind £10k an hour.

Obscene.

In an abstract conversation about value, perhaps not.

But I am willing to bet that in a conversation at your moment of need you would be willing to pay a trauma surgeon that amount to staunch the critical bleeding from the stump of your leg.

Similar scenarios arise for other professionals; bodyguards, firefighters, snake wranglers, etc.

@11:02 - that's true, and an experienced Python Disposal Technician will expect more again. Low tens I'd have thought.

They were a poor example, I concede.

I should have stuck with Alligator Wrestlers for a better illustration of the issue at hand.
