Several top public sector lawyers have had their salaries made public this week.

The release of salary details by the Cabinet Office show that several lawyers are dragging top dolla from the tax take. David Green QC earns about £215,000 as director of the revenues and customs division of the CPS. Keir Starmer QC gathers almost £200k as Director of Public Prosecutions.

Philip Collins - former partner at the firm now known as Hogan Lovells - makes about £180k in his role as chair of the OFT.

But before the Daily Mail letters page flies into frothing response, consider how much these guys could be earning in private practice. Collins would have made about four times his current salary at his former firm. He'll be hoping that the knighthood comes quickly...

     Just another day in paradise

This is only the first step in a new transparent Cabinet Office. It is expected that the identities of all civil servants making over £58,000 will be revealed by next year. Quite right! Name and shame those fat cats earning less than a Magic Circle NQ!
