A Perth based lawyer has been named ALB Dealmaker of the Year, the first lawyer outside the East Coast to receive the award.

Nic Tolé of Allens Arthur Robinson's Perth office bagged the award on the strength of his work on a number of Rio Tinto deals with a potential value of over $200bn.

The award reflects Perth's growing importance as a deal centre (Perth's airport is also being expanded to accommodate increasing business travel). According to Tolé, with the GFC at its worse last year, the resources sector largely held its own. Which meant the level of M&A activity with respect to resource assets was more buoyant in comparison to other sectors.

Tolé also expects growth in the resources sector to continue. He told RollOnFriday "I see continued growth in the resources sector in M&A and project investment. These will continue to be driven by strong growth in China (and in the medium to longer term, development in India, Africa and the Middle East). Australia, and Western Australia in particular, with its oil and gas and mineral resources, is very well placed to capitalise on this."
