A new guide to lawyers' salaries has suggested that pay will start moving - in the right direction - over the next year.

Taking in trends from Australia and New Zealand, the Hays Salary Guide suggests that salaries will bumped by three to five per cent. Hardly earth-shattering, but better than the proverbial poke in the eye. Check out RollOnFriday's handy salary survey to see what difference that's going to make.

And what's more, there are reasons to be cheerful if you're out of work. 45% of employers expect to increase their permanent staff numbers this year - compared to a miserable 21% last year. And temporary staffing levels will also be flying up.

     Lawyers celebrate a 3% raise

The general picture seems more rosy than it's been for some time as the economy starts to gather a touch of momentum. Darren Buchanan of Hays Legal said "for the most part salaries remained constant during the past year...but by late 2009 the market significantly improved and demand for lawyers increased across the board. Today, quality candidates are in a much stronger position than they were one year ago".

So perhaps now you can stop worrying so much about actually having a job, and start pushing for that raise. Although Buchanan continues "Don't price yourself out of contention with over-inflated salary expectations".

Message is - almost - clear - it's not quite time to make hay, but at least the sun is starting to shine through the clouds.
