The buoyant Australian resources sector is driving salary growth for lawyers in Brisbane and Perth.

According to a Hays salary survey, resources law firms are paying top dollar to attract talent - so much so that some firms in Perth and Brisbane have been forced to match or exceed salaries on offer at their Sydney counterparts.

The survey shows senior associates in Perth earn - on average - the same as their counterparts in Sydney (about $120,000). But those at the top of the bigger Perth and Brisbane firms earn more, pushing on to $160,000 (compared with $150,000 in Sydney and Melbourne).

According to Hays Queensland director Darren Buchanan, "We have had to pay some pretty phenomenal salaries to get the talent that we need here."  This includes recruiting lawyers from across the ditch in some cases.

    It's where it's at...

And the surge in the resources sector is having a knock on effect on wider legal recruitment with salaries expected to increase about 3 - 5% this year. Or at least so says the survey, before going on to predict even bigger bumps in "exceptional cirumstances", whatever they might be.

Lawyers who are unimpressed with those figures could do worse than look at opportunities in Perth which has come of ages as a deal centre.

Perhaps Gilbert + Tobin is recruiting?
