Those wall and ceiling decorations are remarkable. I visited Pompeii for the first time last year. Quite spectacular. It reset my perception of Roman society. At the time of the eruption the city was bigger than Londinium in population and building density. The detail is quite breathtaking. Little things like holes in the kerb stones for tying up your oxen. Animal parking. Ffs.
no doubt partly built on the back of their conquest of the UK. we should ask for some of them as reparations. we could put them in the british museum. or maybe at one of our more lovely stately homes
There are Roman mosaics under London. There's a barber in Leadenhall market where you can go in and ask to see what was found under that property. Somewhere else in Ironmonger Lane.
Not visible to the extent as Pompeii, obvs, but likely to be many more as yet undiscovered.
yes, a guide is essential unless you read and read and know what you are looking at but there are people there who have been studying for a generation and can point details out you wont see
Yes, Colchester castle is worth visiting, extensive Roman collection, also you can go down to the dungeons to see the enormous Roman Temple it’s built on. The kids can dress up in Roman or ancient Briton stuff while the wife flirts with the outrageously young staff in the civil war section - something for everyone.

Amazing. And amazing how much has still not been excavated. What else will be discovered?

Went to Pompeii & Herculaneum last year, sprang for a guide (one of the academics actually working on the site) - it was so worth it.
