Given its lofted fashion status as the cuisine d'aujourd'hui (for the last decade), there is now an embarrassment of places to obtain sashimi and sushi in this city. From cheap cafes and supermarkets to high end fine dining, it appears that, for most, sushi is no longer an elegant art and can be purchased with ease from any high street. However, like a Jedward double-CD album, quantity does not necessarily equate to quality.

Thankfully, there are still diamonds in the rough like Dinings, which are here to educate our ignorant souls in the ways of top class eating - regardless of cuisine. Sat on a quiet street between Baker Street and Edgware Road, Dinings is a sushi powerhouse that deserves your attention.

The Disney inspired line of dishes was short lived, but tasted excellent with a spot of wasabi

Given the strangely limited numbers of passers-by, Baker Street is a tough area to open a successful restaurant. It seems only those with a pre-existing reputation, or a large slice of excellence, manage to survive here for longer than a few years. Dinings, has already survived the first few years and has now built itself a deserved reputation for serving exquisite and imaginative sushi and Japanese tapas. It serves up the greatest fusion cuisine you are likely to see anywhere in London.

It really is all about the food here with everything else at its minimalist best. It's a tiny restaurant seating no more than 25-30 people in the entire place and it's always packed. It wouldn't make any difference if there were seats for 200 people - we'd be surprised if a place delivering such a high standard of culinary delight would be anything less than fully booked.

It's no surprise really given chef and founder Tomanari Chiba toiled for nine years at Nobu before embarking on his own modest venture (that's modest in size, not ambition btw). Thank goodness as he has provided us with an education in dining - though expect to pay good money for the lesson (it's worth it).

Seriously. This is the best sushi in London and definitely one of our favourite restaurants. We still lie awake at night salivating over memories of our last instalment of Eel and Foie Gras sushi rolls which is worth the moral dilemma. Book now - we'll see you there.
