We absolutely love to champion the cause of the little guys who are battling for your hard earned cash against some of the heavy weights of the wining and dining industry.

One of those little guys, well, maybe a light middle weight after recent acclaim, is The Green Room of West Hampstead. In this corner of London, home to young professionals and yummy mummys, it is the local restaurants which really make it feel like a enclave of calm away from the city centre with café culture all the rage and brunch a must.

With its evocative use of crockery, The Green Room knew how to please the locals

The Green Room is a frontrunner amongst the local eateries, a modern bistro serving Mediterranean flavours, expertly executed and seasonally selected. The concept couldn't have two better creative minds driving it; a Parisian restaurateur with experience in some of the top kitchens in Europe and his fashion stylist fiancée. The menu and the space benefit from the expertise of both parties and result in some top draw fare in subtly chic surroundings; the food is assured but excellently priced and the room is classy without being overbearing.

Both the service and the wine list are notable; the former being personal and the second being short but well selected. It would be weird if the service was short but well selected; maybe not if it was Kylie, more so if it was Odd Job.

Although this is a local restaurant, they have aspirations of becoming a destination dining spot and on this form we wouldn't bet against it. Help them reach their goal and make The Green Room your next destination.

I used to live just 5 minutes down the road from the Green Room, and can echo the sentiment here: a West Hampstead bistro that is a cut above the rest.

"Intimate" (aka small) but pretty, they are on the same street as a couple of funky bars and decent restaurants.

(Another local secret: the pizza at Sarracino next door is the best in London, possibly the best outside of Naples).

The Green Room is a classier option by far, without being pretentious, and the food and wine is excellent. They are happy to cope with small children, although it's not exactly 'child friendly' (the stairs are dizzily steep). There are also only about 6 tables so you might want to check before turning up.

Overall: Highly recommended.
