Steak. Chips. Red wine. A simple formula, but does life get any better?

Sometimes, you just want a slab of high quality meat to salivate over. Thankfully, our favourite butcher The Ginger Pig happily supplies the meats from some of the happiest animals since Babe went pig in the city. Their philosophy is simple - happy, healthy animals make for tasty food.

The only downside is that the meat comes raw - it leaves us with a terrible wait between buying and feasting. We're far too busy and impatient for that. Step forward Hawksmoor - the best steak restaurant in London (we know this title tends to change at least once a week at Rof Towers).

Hawksmoor source their meat exclusively from the Ginger Pig - so, you know you're off to a good start.

The map was simple, but we still had trouble finding the new Hawksmoor location in Covent Garden

The philosophy at Hawksmoor is just as refreshingly simple as the Ginger Pig - simply grill it for the best flavour and let the meat speak for itself.

The one complicated factor is choosing the cut (and sides) but, helpfully, the various cuts and weights available are scrawled on the chalkboard, many of them easily big enough for two hungry carnivores. The staff are knowledgeable and happy to help those who don’t know their porterhouse from their chateaubriand. Sides and starters are good but, understandably, play second fiddle. Chips, the ubiquitous bedfellow of steak, are triple cooked and accomplished.

Pre-dinner cocktails in the small, but perfectly formed, bar are excellent. Also, in these turbulent financial times, they have a cracking offer on Monday evenings; the Hawksmoor Monday Club. The deal is that you can bring your own wine for the meagre corkage fee of a crisp fiver per bottle which is the sort of fiscal stimulus this country needs.

Go. Eat meat, be merry.
