We're often confused by Portobello Road. We know it's a London treasure, but we're not entirely sure why. Yes, it has trendy shops and funky little bars frequented by beautiful people, but these lead parasitic existences - they emerged and jumped on the popular bandwagon long after it was famous.

The true draw are those stalls on the weekend that basically sell stuff found in skips (but polished up and labelled 'antique'). Tourists lap it up. Sadly, it just makes us claustrophobic. Thankfully, therefore, we find ourselves seeking escape in the clutches of the Fat Badger - an oasis of calm against the backdrop of the bustling market place.

A Fat Badger called Ralph.

At the northern end of Portobello Road this rotund mammal proudly sits, aptly adorned with black and white paint like its namesake. The bar itself is a relaxed and welcoming affair, adhering to the modern gastro chic with distressed furniture and well worn sofas that are perfect for disappearing into with a quality Bloody Mary on a Sunday morning. There are some witty additions to the décor; the wallpaper depicts London scenes but paints it with a rather tongue in cheek brush with hoodies and muggers talking leading roles.

The Fat Badger, not to be confused with a chubby beaver, is a great bar and is "just what you'd want your local to be" as they say on their website. The upstairs dining room is also noteworthy as the food is excellent throughout the pub and they offer some wallet friendly deals at them moment (lunch/supper specials and a half priced wine night). Good booze, cracking bar snacks and a top atmosphere make it the perfect place to avoid the crowds in Notting Hill.
