Entrenched on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the Waterway is one of our favourite pubs in which to spend a sunny day (you remember - the ones you see on American TV). On those roasting summer afternoons (rare though they can be), sat outside the Waterway you can be fooled into thinking nirvana has arrived... almost.

If there were a World Cup of beer gardens, the Waterway would be an overwhelming favourite for the crown, as its setting alongside the canal, framed with strategic greenery, is peaceful despite the obligatory council block in the distance reminding you you're not on rural retreat. Regardless, you can happily sit back and watch the odd shopping trolley make its way along the canal whilst supping your beverage of choice.

A great day boozing at the Waterway is ruined by the treacherous journey home

It would be enough for a pub (in London) to rest on its laurels and rely solely on the strength of its beer garden to survive, but the team at the Waterway are far too ambitious for that. For starters, they complement their wonderful range of beer and wine with a cocktail list guaranteed to keep more discerning drinkers firmly away from sobriety.

Aside from the drinks, they also do excellent bar snacks and have a fantastic restaurant for a more civilised dinner should you not be sated by the tapas served up at the bar. Also, during the summer (weather permitting) they fire up their barbecue on the weekends serving up tasty burgers (amongst other things) that rightly packs out the beer garden on its own. They've also just opened the Summerhouse; a seasonal restaurant addition just down the road that confidently proclaims their fish and chips as the best in town.

Finally, in addition to the food, drink and environment you can also hear aspiring musicians on Thursday evenings performing popular sets to temporarily distract you from your relaxing view.

An escape from London within London is a rare thing and yet the Waterway manages to achieve this - be sure to embrace it at every opportunity. It was always a desirable location, but the addition of sun and the Summerhouse makes this an irresistible relaxation spot.
